    Fisheries Department of Uttarakhand

    Fisheries Resource of Uttarakhand comprise of fast flowing rivers and their tributaries, high and low altitude natural lakes, manmade reservoirs, ponds and diggies. Out of total stream length of 2686kms, 725 km is suitable for food and game fishes. Majority of coldwater fishes are caught from the rivers and streams in small quantity thus do not form fishery of commercial importance but they are indicator of riverine ecosystem. Department has taken initiative for conservation and propagation of cold water fisheries that is trout and Mahseer through angling programme in identified beats of rivers with participation of local individuals or groups. Under this programme the beats are allocated to local cooperatives/groups,who will be authorized for issuing angling permits to international and national tourists along with other local interested people.With that the group will also work for conservation especially in banned fishing period.

    Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are normally caught in the wild. Techniques for catching fish include hand, gathering,spearing, netting, angling and trapping.Fishing may include catching aquatic animals other than fish also. Fisheries and aquaculture not provides fish only as a food option but it also provides direct and indirect employment opportunities in the state.

    The Department of Fisheries is carrying out various schemes for development of fisheries in the state. In the recent years, a large no. of people have been engaged in aquaculture & allied activities.
