What does Department of Fisheries, Uttarakhand do ???
Available area of lakes in Uttarakhand is 297 hectare. Out of existing lakes the lakes situated District Nainital i.e. Bhimtaal, Saataal and Naukuchiataal are managed by fisheries department. Here department issues angling permits to tourist. Department is focusing to establish cages in these lakes for conservation and enhancement of production. Apart from natural lakes several man-made lakes and reservoirs have came into existence due to Hydro electric projects which are yet another resource for fisheries development. Presently 05 reservoirs in district Udhamsingh Nagar and Tehri reservoir are provided for a period of 05 years through calling expression of interest, through which annual revenue to the tune of Rs 4.50 crore is being generated. From FY 2016-17 to promote and establish cage farming cages have been installed in selected reservoirs to attain increased production levels. It is proposed to install around 248 cages in the state to augment fish production.
The high upland regions of Uttarakhand provides conducive ecology for culture and capture of cold water fishes whereas other areas in hills including plain areas are suitable for carp culture and culture of other warm water fishes. Trout and mahseer are local fishes which are of commercial importance. District Haridwar and Udhamsingh nagar have village society ponds in abundance. These ponds are being made available to fishermen community with the help of revenue department for a lease period of 29 years. Apart from this through various central and state sector schemes new ponds are being constructed and renovation of old ponds is being carried out by beneficiaries every year with the aid of Department which provides sanctioned subsidy for construction /renovation works and first year input to the beneficiary as per norms of the scheme. Department has also initiated a scheme to benefit old farmers where several inputs required for pursuing aquaculture are provided on subsidized rates.
