Fish Seed
For sustainable and profitable fish farming, quality fish seed of the candidate species in adequate quantity is one of the most important factoRs. The production of marketable fish begins with stocking of Fingerlings into a culture pond that ensures optimum and rapid growth to allow harvest in the shortest time. Fish Farmer has to stock adequate number of seeds for better results. Farmers must stock fingerlings of minimum of 70 MM size and stocking density of 10,000 fingerlings per hectare of pond. Department of Fisheries Uttrakhand provide seeds of six carp varieties from its Fish seed Hatcheries/Farms situated at district Udhamsingh Nagar and Dehradun and also from different fish rearing units established through different schemes. Department also facilitates farmers of the state to provide seeds of Amur and Pangasius Species from other sources. Department is also promoting Tilapia culture in controlled environment.
Uttrakhand is one of the potential trout farming state of the country. However, trout farming is still in infancy in the state. There are few farmers carrying out trout farming in selected districts, for whom need of trout seed is fulfilled through departmental farm at district Chamoli and procuring seed from other sources.
Interested fish farmers can get Carp Fish seed from April to October & Trout Fish Seed from December to February. For seed availability/procuring, the fish farmers can provide demand either to Block/District fisheries Officials OR they can directly purchase fish seed from Govt fish Farm/Hatcheries.

Fish Feed
In semi-intensive and intensive aquaculture fish feed play a very important role in production and sustainable development of fisheries. It is expected that in aquaculture 60% of the expenditure is done on fish feed. Feeding of fish during fish culture aims at producing the maximum weight of marketable fish within the shortest time at least cost. Feeding increases fish production from the water body and makes farming profitable. Feed must be nutritious and economical in any farming system and must be properly managed to be effective.
Type of Feed --
1. Natural - Natural food can be stimulated to develop in a pond through pond fertilization. A fertilized pond will have tiny plants & animals called Planktons.
2. Supplementary - This type of feed is provided from outside or it is an artificial feed. The nutrients in these feed should be well balanced to meet the nutritional need of the cultured fish species which include Protein, Carbohydrate, Fat, Minerals & vitamins. These feed are in the form of Pellets and granules which can be either floating or sinking. The most important factor in formulated feed is that it contains optimum quantity of protein carbohydrates or minerals or vitamins in fixed ratio for different kind/species and age of fishes. Size of the feed also depends on the age of fish.
For supporting existing fish farmers and reducing the input cost of feed in fish farming Department is providing fish feed on subsidized rates, through a state sector scheme for which the farmers need to contact related Block/District fisheries Officials.
